10 Ways to Combat Pregnancy Nausea

During my recent pregnancy, I was blessed to only experience nausea three times. It was not a good feeling. This was particularly the case when accompanied by cold sweats, dizziness, and a strong feeling of both hunger and not wanting any food at all. It was quite the experience because I wanted to eat as little as possible; however, I wanted to make sure I was eating enough to support my growing fetus. I didn’t want to use typical over-the-counter medicine so I used tactics such as taking deep breaths, acupressure, placing a cold compress on my forehead and neck, and eating dry foods like corn muffins or crackers. In this article, we will cover natural and herbal remedies for nausea during pregnancy.

Ginger Capsules

Ginger works by inhibiting or suppressing certain types of brain and gut receptors that are related to the sense of nausea. In essence, it does what ibuprofen does without putting stress on the liver and without an unhealthy risk of addiction.

For morning sickness in early pregnancy, take 250 mg of ginger four times a day.

Sprig of Mint

The refreshing aroma alone may be enough to make you feel better, but chewing on fresh mint or drinking a glass of mint tea is considered an effective remedy for nausea.

Dandelion

Many people use dandelion root to detoxify, relieve constipation, soothe an upset stomach, and help shed water weight among many other health remedies.

Yellow Dock (Tea)

To make a tea, simmer 1 tsp of the cut and sifted herb for every 1 cup of water for 20 minutes. Drink 1 cup of tea or 3-5 droppers full of the tincture in a little water, 2-3 times daily.

Activated Charcoal

In the case of nausea and vomiting, after each vomiting episode, drink a mixture of one to two large spoonfuls of powder in a little water. You may follow the charcoal water with a glass of plain water if you can't tolerate it.

Peppermint, Chamomile, or Lavender Essential Oil

Best with a carrier oil (unscented oil like olive oil).

Sniff peppermint or lemon essential oil for relief. Rub essential oils behind your ears, on your stomach, or take them internally to relieve symptoms of nausea.

Clove Oil (or powdered clove)

Add one or two drops of clove oil to a cup of chamomile tea. Powdered cloves may be sprinkled on food.

Milk Thistle Seed

Use 1 tsp crushed milk thistle seeds. Simmer milk thistle in 8 oz. of water for 10 minutes.

Take 1-3 cups daily or 1-3 grams of ground milk thistle seed in capsule form.

Ginger Tea Compress

You may also benefit from a ginger compress applied to the stomach. Use a clean cloth soaked in warm ginger tea and hold gently on your stomach until cool.

Morning Joy

Morning Joy helps settle nausea and discomfort that often begins your day if you are expecting a new little one. This product contains ginger root, fennel seed, peppermint leaf, and peppermint oil. These herbs are known to calm the stomach and soothe nausea.
